Saving money has become my top priority in recent times. I've meticulously reviewed my subscriptions, canceling those that I no longer use. I scrutinize my bank statements on a monthly basis. I've even made the investment in a bamboo whisk to prepare my own matcha lattes at home. However, I encountered a persistent obstacle when it came to economizing on my mobile phone plan. My previous carrier had recently hiked the rates for my plan and introduced an additional monthly charge. Despite this, I felt somewhat powerless, as I simply cannot do without my phone.
I decided to take the plunge and explore the TextNow service, which is offered at no cost. I was aware that I could retain my existing phone and number, both of which are crucial to me. Furthermore, TextNow boasts free unlimited nationwide calling and texting, along with what they term as Free Essential Data, which would enable me to check my emails and use rideshare apps and navigation tools, all complimentary with the one-time purchase of a $4.99 SIM card.
After downloading the app, I was given the option to either transfer my current phone number to TextNow or select a new number with any national area code I preferred, a convenient feature. I chose to retain my original number, which would be transferred once I activated their SIM card. In the interim, I was granted immediate access to free calls and texts through the app over WiFi with a temporary number. As I was seeking an alternative to my large-carrier mobile plan, purchasing a SIM card for a one-time fee of $4.99 seemed like an obvious choice. Upon receiving the SIM card in the mail, I inserted it into my phone and followed a straightforward setup process.
Mashable Light Speed The TextNow SIM is what enables me to make calls and send texts from virtually anywhere, with coverage that rivals my previous large carrier. My calls were free from any issues, and the audio quality was impressive. It's important to note that you do not use your phone's native dialer when using TextNow—all communications are channeled through the app—so the experience felt somewhat different initially, but I quickly adapted and was able to send photos, sushi emojis, and cat GIFs in my texts, as well as receive voicemails from my father.
The SIM also unlocked TextNow’s Free Essential Data plan, which allowed me to check my email while in line at the grocery store, navigate to the nearest tea shop, and even book a ride to get there. Add-on data and a 5G network sealed the deal. Using TextNow’s basic free services might suffice for some individuals, but I typically require more data when I'm not at home. For those occasions, TextNow offers an unlimited 1-hour pass for $0.99, an unlimited 24-hour day pass for $4.99, or an unlimited monthly pass for $39.99. I appreciate the flexibility of these options; I don't always have to commit to a monthly plan to receive the service I need. Instead, I can simply upgrade for a few hours or a day when it's necessary.
I opted for the ad-free monthly pass and was able to download a work PDF, browse my social media, and even listen to a podcast episode while at the dog park. I honestly forgot that I was using TextNow mobile data and not my previous large carrier—likely because TextNow utilizes the nation's largest 5G network for coverage. A mobile plan that saves you significant money.
TextNow functions like any major mobile carrier but includes in-app advertisements in most plans (this is how it remains free). It's an excellent option for students on a tight budget, parents looking for a free phone plan for their teenagers, and even data-conscious individuals like myself who are budget-minded. I believe I have finally found a solution to my mobile budget dilemma. TextNow has proven to be a reliable alternative to my large carrier, and even if I purchase the monthly pass for $39.99, I will be saving money, considering my previous carrier just increased the cost of my monthly plan and added extra fees. With TextNow, I can control my own data expenses, starting at $0. With savings like these, I can indulge in fancy matcha lattes again and still adhere to my budget.
